Electrocardiogram
Electrocardiogram is a foundational piece of cardiovascular assessment. Chances are, if there are any kinds of concerns about the health of your heart, you will have an electrocardiogram as part of the analysis process. While this is unlikely to be the only piece of the assessment puzzle used to make a diagnosis, it is a great starting point. If you need to have an electrocardiogram, or if you would like to learn more about any of the services, we offer at Beverly Hills Cardiovascular, please contact us right away.
How It Works
The idea of an electrocardiogram is rather simple, even if it does require some advanced technology to make it happen. The machine will record the electrical signals in your heart, providing your healthcare professional with a good look at how your heart is working and what issues may be present.
While having the electrical signals in your heart monitored might sound intimidating or scary, the reality is that this is a noninvasive test which should not cause any pain at all. There will be sensors attached to your body externally while the test is administered, and those sensors will be removed once the test is complete. There should be no discomfort of side effects from having this test performed. If anything, you may experience a slight irritation of the skin as a result of the sensors being placed on your body, but that should be modest, at most.
A Variety of Motivations
Your doctor may choose to order an electrocardiogram for a variety of reasons. For one, if there is a suspicion that you are dealing with arrhythmias, an electrocardiogram can look for that issue. Also, structural problems in the chambers of your heart may be indicated, or the test could be used to evaluate whether or not the treatments you have been using for your heart have been effective. If you think that an electrocardiogram might be helpful in your situation, talk to your doctor directly about the possibility of having this test. A conversation about your overall health and what conditions may be affecting you is the best way to decide on a plan of action.
Not the Final Word
If something on your electrocardiogram results leads your doctor to be concerned about your heart health, it may be necessary to have other tests performed. These tests could include an echocardiogram or some other form of evaluation, based on what kind of condition is suspected. It is usually the combination of an electrocardiogram with other forms of heart health evaluation that allow a doctor to make a confident diagnosis.
