How do you plan out what you are going to eat on a daily basis? If you are like many people, you don’t think about it much at all – you just eat whatever is available and easy to prepare. Maybe you are someone who eats out at local restaurants all the time, or maybe you like to cook but keep it simple. Whatever the case, you may already be aware that what you eat has a powerful impact on your health overall.
While you might think about what you eat in terms of picking smart foods, you may not think often about what kinds of foods you eat together. This issue isn’t considered by many people, but you may want to spend some time learning about how matching up the right foods with each other could impact you positively.
What Could Result from Bad Combinations?
Eating the wrong foods together could lead to some negative outcomes, ranging from mildly annoying to consistently frustrating and uncomfortable. For example, you might deal with indigestion if you pair the wrong foods with one another. As you surely already know, indigestion is not something you want to have on a regular basis, as it is rather uncomfortable and can make it difficult to enjoy day to day life. If you can sort out the food combinations which may be leading to some digestive problems, your meals will be more enjoyable as you’ll feel better after they are complete.
A Starting Point
When you first start thinking about the idea of managing how you combine foods for your meals, you might feel a little overwhelmed and intimidated. You probably eat a few times per day, so the prospect of planning everything out so you have the right combinations available from breakfast on through dinner. So, how can you start to incorporate food pairings into your daily, real-world life? The best thing you can do is start small and keep things simple. You don’t have to do everything all at once, so look to make little changes and go from there.
One little step you can take is to simply start eating fruit as a snack by itself. This is something plenty of people already do, of course, but many do not. If you aren’t already in the habit of eating fruit on its own, give it a try from time to time. Not only are a variety of fruits healthful for the vitamins and minerals that they deliver, but they’ll also help your stomach adapt to some new eating habits.
Two Simple Tips
As far as food combinations go, one good rule of thumb is to limit the number of raw foods you eat alongside cooked foods. This is bound to happen from time to time, certainly, but limiting the frequency that you blend these two categories is a step you can take. Likewise, do your best to limit how often leftover foods are combined with fresh foods in your meals. If you are going to eat leftovers, like for lunch the next day, consider eating those on their own and having fresh new foods at another time.
More Important for Some Than Others
For some people, digestive issues just don’t seem to be much of a problem. If you tend to have a strong digestive system that ‘burns’ through most of what you send its way, you might not be as sensitive to food combinations as others. This is a great thing, of course, and the food combinations that tend to be bad for many people might not wind up bothering you at all. Even if that is the case, you can still pay attention to this topic and take note if there are any combinations that seem to disrupt your system.
An Established Tolerance
In some cases, people who have been eating certain combinations of food together for a long time may have no problem with those combinations, while another person who doesn’t normally eat those foods together may struggle with indigestion or other issues. If you see someone else eating a combination of food that gives you trouble but doesn’t bother them at all, don’t assume that you are doing something wrong or that you should be able to handle it. It may be that this other person has been eating that kind of combination of many years and has adjusted to it as necessary. For example, milk and bananas are a combination that will give many people trouble, so that is one that is recommended to avoid. However, some people might be able to handle it just fine, depending on their own personal digestive system and their dietary history. That doesn’t mean that you’ll be able to manage milk and bananas without trouble, as this is a pairing that leads to digestive problems for plenty of individuals.
